There are three ways to remove the Recycle Bin from the desktop, ordered here from the simplest toggle to a policy change that keeps it gone for good. Most users only need the first method.

Method 1: Hide the Recycle Bin with Desktop Icon Settings

The Desktop Icon Settings panel is the built-in switch for the Recycle Bin. It hides that single icon and leaves everything else on the desktop untouched.

1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop, then click Personalize.
2. Select Themes, then scroll down and click Desktop icon settings under Related settings.
3. Untick Recycle Bin in the list of desktop icons, then click Apply followed by OK. The icon leaves the desktop straight away.

Hiding the icon here does not empty or disable the Recycle Bin. Deleted files still go to it, and it stays reachable by typing Recycle Bin into the Start menu search.

Method 2: Hide Every Desktop Icon at Once

For a completely clear desktop, Windows 11 can hide every icon in one action. This is the quicker option when the goal is a clean look rather than removing the Recycle Bin on its own.

1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop and hover over View.
2. Click Show desktop icons to remove the tick beside it. Every icon on the desktop, including the Recycle Bin, is hidden at once.
3. Repeat both steps to bring the icons back.

This toggle hides shortcuts and files as well, so it is a display setting rather than a way to isolate the Recycle Bin. Nothing on the desktop is deleted, only hidden, much like choosing to show or hide files in File Explorer.

Method 3: Remove the Recycle Bin with Group Policy

The first two methods can be switched back by anyone using the PC. To keep the Recycle Bin off the desktop and stop it being turned on again, Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise editions can enforce it through the Group Policy Editor.

1. Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
2. Go to User Configuration, then Administrative Templates, then Desktop.
3. Double-click Remove Recycle Bin icon from desktop, set it to Enabled, then click Apply and OK.
4. Sign out and back in, or restart, for the policy to take effect.

Windows 11 Home does not include the Group Policy Editor. The same result comes from a registry edit. Open Registry Editor, go to the key below, and set the value named {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} to 1.

After changing the value, sign out and back in to apply it.

How to Show the Recycle Bin Again in Windows 11

To restore the Recycle Bin, reverse whichever method hid it. In most cases that means re-ticking one box in Desktop Icon Settings.

1. Open Desktop icon settings as in Method 1, tick Recycle Bin, then click Apply. The icon returns to the desktop.
2. If the icons were hidden through the View menu, right-click the desktop, hover over View, and click Show desktop icons so the tick returns.
3. If a Group Policy or registry change was used, set Remove Recycle Bin icon from desktop back to Not Configured, or change the registry value to 0, then sign out and back in.

If the Recycle Bin disappeared without anyone deliberately changing these settings, the Desktop Icon Settings tick is almost always the fix.

What the Recycle Bin Does in Windows 11

The Recycle Bin is a temporary holding area for deleted files and folders before they are removed for good. It sits on the desktop by default, and its capacity scales with the size of the drive.
