The camera arrives, the app asks for a card, and the price on the box turns out to have been a deposit. A security camera subscription is the part of home security that rarely gets priced in advance, and it keeps charging for as long as the cameras stay on the wall.
The fee covers four separate things sold as one line item: somewhere offsite to keep recordings, filtering that decides which motion is worth an alert, extra software features, and an optional monitoring service with people in it. Most households need one or two of the four. Some need none.

Plan names differ by brand and the contents barely do. A security camera subscription is built from the same four parts on almost every platform, and separating them turns an awkward yes or no into a decision.

Offsite video history. Recorded clips upload to the vendor’s servers and are held for a retention window, commonly two weeks to two months depending on tier. This is the part people mean by cloud storage, and it is the only part of the bundle that survives the camera being stolen.
Event filtering. Raw motion detection triggers on headlights, rain, cats and shifting shade. Filtering sorts motion into people, vehicles, packages and animals so alerts mean something. These vary most between brands and matter least to most households, with one exception. Continuous recording in a vendor’s own app is normally a top-tier feature, and where it is offered it is often restricted to mains-powered cameras, since a battery camera cannot record around the clock. A local recorder does the same job without a plan.
Professional monitoring. A staffed center watches alarm signals and responds. It is a service rather than a software feature, it is usually the top tier or a separate line, and it is the one part of the bundle no hardware purchase replaces.
Which of the four a household actually needs is the whole question. For a home with a few cameras, self-monitoring on a phone, and a habit of checking clips only after something happens, the honest answer is often the first one and nothing else.
What Still Works Without a Security Camera Subscription
Cameras do not stop working when a plan lapses. On mainstream platforms the following keep running, and between them they cover the everyday use of a camera.
- Live view. Opening the app and watching the feed at full resolution, on demand.
- Motion alerts. A push notification when the camera sees movement, usually with a thumbnail attached.
- Two-way audio and the siren. Talking to a delivery driver, or setting off the alarm manually.
- Local recording, where the hardware supports it. A microSD card, a base station or a network recorder holds the footage instead of the vendor.
- On-device detection, where the hardware supports it. Cameras with the processing built in sort people from cars without sending anything anywhere.
What a lapsed security camera subscription takes away is narrower than it feels, and it maps onto the same four parts. Recorded clips are no longer kept for later, the app offers a snapshot rather than a video, cloud-side detection goes quiet, and anything sold as an extra feature goes with it.
One catch is worth naming, because it is the most common complaint in this category and it is not really about price.
Heads up: what a free tier includes is set by the vendor and has been narrowed after purchase before. Features that shipped free with a camera have later moved behind a plan, which makes a free tier a current condition rather than a property of the hardware. Local storage and on-device detection cannot be withdrawn by a policy change. A generous free cloud tier can be.
Security Camera Subscription Costs: Fee Times Cameras Times Years
A monthly figure is small by design and is usually compared against nothing. The number that settles this is the fee multiplied by the number of cameras, multiplied by the years those cameras stay on the wall.
Plans come in two structures, and the gap between them is wider than the gap between brands.

Using round numbers for the arithmetic rather than any particular brand’s prices: at three dollars per camera against ten dollars for unlimited cameras, three cameras cost nine and four cost twelve, so the crossover sits at four. Past that point every extra camera on the household tier is free.
Note: the crossover is why a plan that looks cheap at one camera stops looking cheap at four. Anyone expecting to add cameras later should price the plan they will end up on rather than the one they start on.
Then multiply by time, because cameras stay up for years and a security camera subscription is best read as a rental agreement on footage. At 2026 rates, roughly three to eight dollars a month for a single camera and ten to twenty for a whole household, five years on a mid-tier household plan runs to several hundred dollars. Keeping recordings at home substitutes for the storage half of the bundle. Three arrangements cover almost every home setup.

A microSD card in the camera. The cheapest option and the most common on wireless cameras. A card in a security camera is rewritten continuously rather than filled once, so the Video Speed Class rating matters: V10 guarantees a sustained ten megabytes per second and V30 guarantees thirty, and the rating exists so recording does not drop frames. Cards sold as high endurance are built for exactly this pattern of use and are rated in hours of continuous recording rather than capacity alone, which ordinary cards are not.
A base station or hub. Several wireless systems ship with a hub that holds storage for every camera on the system, sometimes with a card slot and sometimes with a drive bay. Footage sits in one place, and the cameras themselves hold nothing worth stealing.
A network video recorder or a NAS. A dedicated box with a hard drive, recording continuously from every camera on the network. A network video recorder is the most capable option, the most work to set up, and the natural fit for a wired system. None of the three is a free win, and each has a specific weakness.

The one thing local storage cannot do is survive the loss of the thing it lives in. A camera taken off a wall takes its card with it, and a recorder in a hallway cupboard is as reachable as anything else in the house. The last three matter most to anyone willing to run their own recording software. Open-source packages such as Frigate record from IP cameras and run object detection on local hardware, which replaces both the storage and the filtering halves of a plan in exchange for setting it up and maintaining it. That is a real option for a technical household and a poor one for everybody else.
Support for local recording and standard protocols is model-dependent rather than brand-wide, so the spec sheet is the only reliable answer. As a starting point, Reolink, Amcrest and Lorex build around local recording and open protocols, and Eufy, Blink and Arlo offer local storage on parts of their range while keeping detection and video history inside their own apps. Professional Monitoring Is the One Part Hardware Cannot Replace
Monitoring is a staffed service. When an alarm triggers, a person at a monitoring center works a procedure: confirm the alarm, contact the household, and escalate to emergency services if it stands up.

Those procedures are written down rather than improvised. The Monitoring Association, an ANSI-accredited standards development organization for this industry, publishes ANSI/TMA-CS-V-01 covering alarm confirmation, verification and notification procedures, and ANSI/TMA-AVS-01 for scoring how well an alarm has been confirmed before dispatch is requested.
Verification is the substance of the service. Response to unverified alarms is treated differently across jurisdictions, sometimes with fees attached to false calls, so the value of monitoring lies mostly in someone else confirming an alarm is real before anyone is sent. Local rules on police response vary widely and are worth checking locally rather than assuming.
Monitoring suits a specific set of households: those away for long stretches, those with medical or vulnerability considerations, those whose insurer recognizes a monitored system, and anyone who would rather not be the one making the call at 3 a.m. Everybody else is self-monitoring on a phone, which is free and works well enough for most of what home cameras record.
A Security Camera Subscription You Might Already Be Paying For
Households already inside Apple’s ecosystem may have part of this covered. HomeKit Secure Video stores footage from supported cameras in iCloud as part of an existing iCloud+ plan, and Apple’s own documentation is specific about the terms.
- Recorded video is end to end encrypted and does not count against the iCloud storage allowance.
- The Home app holds ten days of activity.
- Analysis runs on the home hub, on device, rather than in the cloud.
- Camera allowance follows the tier: 50 GB supports one camera, 200 GB supports up to five, and 2 TB and above support an unlimited number.
Two constraints apply. The camera has to support HomeKit Secure Video, which is a minority of models, and a home hub has to be present in the house. Where both hold, the storage half of a security camera subscription is already paid for.
When Paying Is the Right Call
A plan earns its money in several situations, and it is worth being direct about which.
- One camera or one doorbell. A single-camera plan is cheap, and the hardware that would replace it often is not.
- Renting. Recorders and drilled-in hubs are awkward in a rental, and cloud storage moves with the tenant.
- No appetite for maintenance. Cards fail quietly, drives fill, recorders need updates. A plan makes that somebody else’s job.
- Footage that has to survive the camera. Anything worth handing to an insurer or the police is worth holding offsite.
- Monitoring is the actual requirement. Where a staffed response is the point, this is the only route to it.
- Several people need access. Multi-user sharing and finer account controls are usually plan features.
When It Is Not Worth It
Equally, some households are paying monthly for capability their hardware already has.
- Several cameras on a per-camera plan. The arithmetic above turns against this quickly.
- Hardware that already detects on the device. Paying for cloud filtering that duplicates it is paying twice.
- A NAS or home server already running. The storage exists and the recording software is free.
- Cameras kept as a record rather than as evidence. Watching a driveway live and checking the occasional clip costs nothing.
- Cameras placed where they will never identify anyone. A plan adds no detail that the position never captured.
Questions to Ask Before Paying for a Security Camera Subscription
The answers that decide this are usually in the plan’s own terms rather than on the price list. Each of these is worth confirming before a card goes in.
- How long is the retention window? Two weeks and two months are both common, and the difference matters for anything noticed late.
- Is it charged per camera or per household? And where does the crossover sit, given the number of cameras likely within a year.
- What happens to stored clips on cancellation? Cloud recordings are generally deleted at or shortly after the end of a plan, so anything worth keeping is worth downloading first.
- Does the camera keep recording locally if the plan lapses? On hardware with a card slot the answer is usually yes, which makes cancelling a downgrade rather than a shutdown.
- Is the price fixed for the term? Annual billing is usually cheaper and it holds the rate for a year.
- Which features are cloud-side? Anything analyzed on the vendor’s servers stops with the plan, and that list is longer on some platforms than others.
- What protects the account? Everything a plan stores is reachable by anyone who reaches the account.
Heads up: a cloud plan makes the account the weakest point in the system, because anyone holding the password can watch the house. Turn on multi-factor authentication, which CISA recommends for exactly this class of account, use a password that is not reused anywhere else, and check which people and which apps still have access.
