Deciding where to place security cameras is what separates footage that identifies someone from footage that only proves an event happened. A camera can cover the front of a house perfectly and still produce a clip nobody can use: a figure crossing the driveway with a hood up, forty feet from the lens, and no face in the frame at any zoom level. That camera did exactly what it was mounted to do. It was mounted in the wrong place for the job it was given.
Placement is three questions asked at every position: how much detail reaches that distance, what the light does there through the day and at night, and what the house will physically allow. Answer those three and the list of good spots writes itself.

Coverage Is Not the Goal When Placing Security Cameras
The number that decides whether footage is usable is not the camera’s resolution. It is how many pixels land on the person, and that depends on resolution, lens and distance together.
IEC 62676-4, the international standard for video surveillance systems, measures this as pixels per meter across the scene. Its 2014 edition sets out four levels: about 25 pixels per meter to notice a person is present, 62.5 to follow what they are doing, 125 to recognize someone already known, and 250 to identify a stranger. A later edition raises the identification figure, because 250 turns out to be thin in poor light.
Resolution alone hides all of this. A 4K camera behind a 110 degree lens spreads its pixels across a very wide scene, so a person at thirty feet occupies few of them. The same sensor behind a narrower lens concentrates those pixels into a smaller area and produces far more detail at the same distance. Field of view is set by the lens and the sensor, not by the megapixel count.
Distance compounds it. Doubling the distance between camera and subject roughly halves the pixels per meter landing on that subject.
The rule that follows is the one most first camera sets get wrong. One camera cannot both watch a whole yard and identify a face at the door. That is why where to place security cameras is decided by the job each one is given, because the job sets the distance and the distance sets the position.
Follow the Approach, Not the Walls
The instinct when working out where to place security cameras is to put one on each side of the house. The better method is to trace how a person reaches each opening, then place cameras where those routes narrow.
Nobody arrives at a back window directly. They come through a gate, along the strip between the house and the fence, or across a lawn from a rear boundary. Those are chokepoints, and a chokepoint is worth more than a wall, because anyone crossing one is close to the camera, moving slowly, and has nowhere else to be.
Crime data supports covering ordinary approaches rather than dramatic ones. In the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ most detailed breakdown of household burglary, covering 2003 to 2007, most burglaries involved no forced entry at all. Unlawful entry without force accounted for about 53 percent of household burglaries and about 63 percent of completed ones.
Where force was used, doors were involved in 73.4 percent of forcible entries and windows in 48.8 percent. For recent scale, Criminal Victimization, 2024 puts household burglary or trespassing at about 1.01 percent of US households in its reference year.
That changes what good footage looks like. If most entries involve someone simply walking in through an unsecured door, the useful frame is a person walking up a path at a normal pace, not a moment of force. Cameras that identify people on approach are worth more than cameras watching a door for a break-in that usually never happens.

- The gate, or the gap between the house and the boundary fence
- The strip along the side of the house that leads to the back
- The driveway entrance, which every vehicle and most people cross
- The porch or front step, where anyone at the front door has to stand
- The side door of a garage, often the weakest opening on the property
Where Security Cameras Earn Their Place
Working out where to place security cameras on a specific house comes down to the positions below. Each one has a job attached, a distance that the job needs, and one specific failure that spot produces when it is chosen carelessly.
The Front Door
The front door is an identification position. Anyone with business at the house stands still there for several seconds at a known distance, which is the easiest identification shot a home will ever get. It only works if the camera is close, within about ten feet, and at or slightly above head height so a face is seen rather than a scalp.
That is why doorbell cameras produce better faces than most systems. They sit around four feet off the ground by design, which puts the lens level with a face instead of above it, at a distance of a couple of feet. A camera tucked into a porch ceiling directly above the door does the opposite. It records the top of a head, a pair of shoulders, and a parcel.
The front door also wants context that a close camera cannot provide: which direction someone came from, whether a vehicle waited, and how long they were on the property.
Note: the front door is the one place worth two cameras. A doorbell or low-mounted camera takes faces at close range, and a second camera higher on the wall or on a corner covers the path, the driveway and the street. Two jobs, two cameras, and neither has to compromise for the other.
Back and Side Doors
Back and side doors are less visible from the street, which is exactly why they get more attention from anyone who would rather not be seen. They deserve the same identification quality as the front, and they rarely get it.
Mount on the wall that runs along the approach path rather than the wall the door sits in. A person then crosses the frame instead of walking straight at the lens, which produces more frames of them at usable size.
It also suits how most cameras trigger. Passive infrared sensors, the motion detectors in most battery cameras and many mains-powered ones, respond much better to movement across their field than to movement toward them. That is why a camera pointed straight down a path often misses the person walking up it until they are almost at the door.
The Driveway and Garage
A driveway asks the hardest question on the property, because reading a license plate needs identification-grade detail on a moving object, often at night, sometimes with headlights pointed at the lens.
Point a camera along the driveway rather than across it, keep it low enough that a plate is not seen edge on, and put it near the entrance where vehicles slow down. A camera at ten feet looking down at a car thirty feet away will show that a car is there and little else. A plate read is a dedicated camera with a narrow lens and a single job, not a bonus feature of a general one.
Inside the garage, one camera covers what is often the second most valuable room in the house, along with the internal door that leads from it into the home. Garages hold tools, bicycles and vehicles, and their side doors are frequently the flimsiest entry point on the property.
Ground-Floor Windows and the Yard
Ground-floor windows are a detection job rather than an identification one, and the instinct to fit a camera per window wastes money. One camera mounted on an external corner sees along two walls at once and covers the ground beneath several windows in a single view.
Corner mounting is the highest-value habit in home camera placement. It cuts the number of cameras a house needs, gives each one a longer sightline, and puts the unit on a stronger fixing point than a flat run of wall.
The side of the house worth covering first is whichever one is screened from the street by a fence, a hedge or a neighbor’s garage, because privacy from the road works in both directions.

Where to Place Security Cameras Inside the House
Indoors, where to place security cameras is a question about chokepoints rather than rooms. Anyone who enters a house and moves through it passes an entry hall, a stair landing, or the hallway linking the bedrooms to the way out. Two cameras on those points see more of what happens than six spread across individual rooms, and they generate a fraction of the footage to review.

An indoor camera facing the inside of the front door is an underrated identification position. The light is controlled, the distance is short, and there is no weather, backlight or infrared bounce to work around.
Some rooms are off limits regardless of the security case. Bathrooms and bedrooms are the obvious ones, and any room a guest sleeps in belongs on the same list. Indoor cameras only work as household infrastructure when everyone living there knows where they are and agrees to them.
How High, and at What Angle
Eight to ten feet is the working convention for outdoor cameras, and the reasoning behind it is a compromise rather than an optimum. It sits above the height at which a camera can be knocked off a wall casually, and still low enough that a person at close range fills a useful part of the frame.

Above roughly twelve feet the compromise breaks. The camera looks down steeply, faces are foreshortened into foreheads and hats, and the footage becomes a record that an event happened rather than evidence of who was involved. A camera under a second-floor eave covering a front door is the most common version of this, and no amount of resolution recovers a face from that angle.
Angle matters as much as height. Aim so that a person at the distance that matters sits in the middle third of the frame, not so the horizon runs across the center. A camera with sky filling its upper half exposes for the sky and underexposes everything at ground level, which is where the subject is.
Two habits improve almost any mounting decision:
- Mount on corners rather than flat walls. One camera covers two elevations, sightlines run diagonally across approaches instead of straight at them, and the fixing goes into a stronger part of the structure.
- Choose a height that can be reached again. Lenses need cleaning, batteries need charging, and mounts drift after storms. A position that needs an extension ladder and a second person is a position that quietly stops being maintained.
Light Decides Whether the Footage Is Usable
Light does more damage to home camera footage than resolution ever does, and every problem it causes is a placement problem.

The sun moves. A camera aimed at the point where the sun rises is blinded every clear morning, and one aimed at where it sets is blinded every clear evening, in both cases at the hours when people are coming and going. A bright source in or near the frame also throws lens flare across the image, washing out the part of the scene that matters most.
Backlight is the same problem in a smaller form. A person standing in front of a bright sky, a sunlit white wall, or a porch light behind them becomes a silhouette. Light has to fall on the subject from behind or beside the camera, never from behind the subject.
At night the camera makes its own light, and that creates a placement rule most people learn the hard way. Infrared bounces off any pale surface close to the lens. An eave a few inches above, a wall a foot to one side, rain, snow, or a spider web strung across the housing will reflect the camera’s own infrared straight back and turn the picture into a white haze.
Heads up: an indoor camera pointed out through a window fails on all three counts. Its infrared reflects off the glass and whites out the night view entirely, daytime reflections wash out the image, and passive infrared motion sensors do not see through glass, so the camera often does not trigger at all. A window is a viewing position for people, not for cameras.
Adding light is often a bigger improvement than adding camera. A motion floodlight aimed along an approach turns a noisy infrared image into a color one for a fraction of the cost of a better camera. The same floodlight inside the frame ruins the shot, so it belongs beside or behind the camera, aimed the same way.
What the House Will Physically Allow
The building itself limits where to place security cameras, whatever the view from a spot looks like. A position that fails any of these is not a position.

- Wi-Fi. Exterior walls weaken a signal considerably, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi carries more data but loses range through obstacles faster than 2.4 GHz. Stand at the intended spot with a phone and check the signal before drilling anything.
- Something to fix into. Brick, timber and soffit board hold a camera. Vinyl siding needs a proper mounting block. Renters may not be able to drill at all, which pushes the choice toward battery cameras on clamps and adhesive mounts.
- Weather. Outdoor cameras carry an IP rating from IEC 60529 describing what they resist, and that rating is not a reason to skip shelter. A lens under an eave stays clear in wind-driven rain for years longer than one on an exposed wall.
- Access. Anything needing a ladder needs someone who can use one safely, on stable ground, ideally with another person present.
Where Not to Place Security Cameras
Some positions look sensible and are not.
- Bathrooms, bedrooms, and any room a guest sleeps in. No security benefit justifies it.
- Anywhere covering a neighbor’s windows, yard or door. Filming a public street from private property is broadly accepted, but a lens pointed into someone else’s private space is a different matter.
- Behind a window, looking out. Infrared reflects off glass, daytime reflections wash out the image, and motion triggers fail.
- Aimed at a street light, a security light, or the sun’s daily path. The camera exposes for the bright source and leaves everything else dark.
- Tight under a low eave or hard against a wall. The nearby surface bounces infrared straight back into the lens.
- Anywhere a ladder cannot safely reach. Maintenance decides how long a camera keeps working.
Heads up: privacy rules for recording beyond your own property vary by country and often by state, and audio is frequently treated more strictly than video. The test that usually matters is whether the area being filmed carries a reasonable expectation of privacy. Where a useful view unavoidably includes part of a neighbor’s property, most camera apps offer privacy masking zones that black out that region permanently. Test a Security Camera Placement Before the Screws Go In
Testing is what turns a guess about where to place security cameras into a decision. Twenty minutes of it prevents the most common outcome in home security, which is a set of cameras producing footage nobody can act on.
- Hold the camera at the exact intended spot using a clamp, a tripod or tape. Most cameras stream to a phone before they are mounted, which is enough to judge a view.
- Record a walk-up. Have someone walk the approach at a normal pace and stop where a visitor would stop.
- Play the clip back on a large screen rather than a phone. A face that looks fine on a phone is often unusable at full size, and full size is where footage actually gets reviewed.
- Repeat after dark, with the outside lights in whatever state they are normally left overnight.
- Check the view at the worst hour for sun, usually within an hour of sunrise and an hour of sunset.
- Leave motion alerts on for a day and count the false triggers from traffic, trees, flags and heat vents. A camera that cries wolf gets ignored.
- Fix it permanently only once all of the above look right.

A house with four well-placed cameras produces better evidence than a house with eight that all watch the same open lawn from the same height.
